Times are Changing....
On Tuesday, June 11, we lost another Godly partner. Sam Shaffer helped regularly with clean up and picked up donuts for Sunday mornings with his wife, Iris, of nearly 55 years. Sam made two other big contributions to Bridge of Hope which stand out to me. First is our soundboard case. This heavy-duty case still gets rolled in and out of the theater every week. The second, a ramp, was what truly opened my eyes to Sam’s skill with wood. We just needed to role cases down 3 steps. I pictured a sheet of plywood; he brought us 2 rails with sides, fully supported, and connected with brackets and braces. It was a work of art that perfectly served its purpose.
When I think of Sam, I think of how important everyone is in the Body of Christ. You may think you have nothing to offer or you’re not of any real value, but that’s not how it works. God made you perfectly to serve a need in this world. Don’t stop searching for your “gift.” And, when you figure it out, give it away like Sam.
On Sunday, June 16, Armond (Fuzzy) announced to the congregation that he would be moving to Des Moines to lead worship with Radiant Church.
We will miss him and his family too. Armond has been the foundation of our praise teams; coordinator of our outreach events; mentor to youth, young adults, and adults; and a good friend in ministry. When he came, he said he would give us three years, and he gave us several more. His sense is that it is time for him to “get out of the way.” For us, it seems like really big shoes to fill, but we are already seeing people willing to step forward.
I need to say thanks to the family too… the Floyd children were all helpful with nursery; they’re just really good with little kids. Rachel blessed many other women with her listening ear, encouragement, and wisdom. We were all blessed each time she shared before the offering to challenge us to give our lives to God.
As I think of Armond, I am reminded how each of us is called to love others. Armond’s ability to connect instantly with complete strangers has challenged me and many others to step out of our comfort zones to befriend others. I am certain Armond would love nothing more than for each of us to step up and build relationships with others where we truly point them to Jesus in our actions and speech.
